T K M College of Engineering, the first Government- aided engineering college in Kerala, is situated in the cashew hub of Kerala, City of Kollam. Spanning over an area of more than 25 Acres, it is ideally located, in Karikode, on the Kollam- Chenkotta road, about 5 kilometers from the heart of the city. The campus, a distinctive landmark that cuts above the rest is built in the aesthetic Indo Saracenic architectural style with mughal influence .
The college is the first and foremost institution for technical education, run by the T K M Educational Trust, headed by Janab Shahal Hassan Musaliar. The foundation stone of the college was laid in the year 1956 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of Independent India. The college was formally inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs, Govt. of India, on 3rd July, 1958.
At its start, the college began its stride with the three basic branches of engineering – Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Today it is a renowned technical institution in India, offering courses in eight branches of engineering at under graduation level, eight M-Tech programs and MCA program at post graduate level.
The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, TKMCE, Kollam was started in the year 1958 with student strength of 40. The degree offered was BSC (Engineering) in Electrical Engineering as its initial stage. Right from the beginning, the department has been rated very high performance in academic circles. The graduates from this department include many renowned technocrats, academicians and researchers, working all over the world. It offers one Under-Graduate programme (B.Tech.) in aided stream .
The department is honoured to have well qualified and experienced faculty and an equally enthusiastic technical team so that the department is dedicated to the promotion of excellence in Engineering education and to impart knowledge to the students in the field of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science so that they can compete in the above mentioned fields after graduation and get proper placements. The faculty members have strong sense of responsibility to provide the deepest possible education for students. Most of the students of this department get placement in leading industries or organisations and get admission in reputed institutions in India and abroad for their higher studies. Many students of this department secure high rank for national level competitive examination for their higher studies. The department themselves provide efficient coaching for students, those who are preparing for entrance examinations like GATE.
The Department has excellent contact with the neighbouring industries. The department is recognised as ‘Testing and Consultancy Centre’ by the Government and Kerala State Electricity Board.
Kollam is a small and beautiful town situated on the Ashtamudi Lake , some 71 kms from Trivandrum , the capital city of Kerala . The town lies in the lower quarters, that is towards the south of the state. Kollam shares its eastern borders with the state of Tamil Nadu, the northern side is bounded by Pathanamthitta, the southern by Trivandrum , and towards the west lies the stretched out Lakshwadeep islands of the Arabian Sea . The place is connected with the rest of the state with continuous railway lines and roads. The town can be seen as sandwiched between Ashtamudi Lake and the Arabian Sea .
Kollam has well established rail and road links with the neighbouring cities and the rest of Kerala. There is a major railway junction and an established bus stand that sees to the tourists coming from other cities of Kerala and beyond Kerala. The nearest airport is situated at Trivandrum , the capital city of Kerala . The distance from the airport to Kollam is about 71 kms.
